Peter is offered a permanent posting in Malaysia after a short stint in Kuala Laumpur. Plans are discussed and a decision made. Carol and Peter are married on a warm day on 17 March 1990 at Old Finsbury Town Hall Islington with a small group of friends and relatives in attendance.

Carol looks at various options to keep busy including an MBA at Kuala Lumpur University. On the expat grapevine Chris Thompson hears there is an ex-banker coming to town and offers Carol a try out in financial journalism. A new career is born.

Carol soon establishes an independent place on the KL social scene and settles in well even discovering old Guildhall alumni running the local bar. Peter and Carol explore West Malaysia at the weekends and SE Asia in holidays making forays to Sumatra, Java, the Spice Islands, Thailand and Hong Kong. Carol revels in the adventure of new methods of travel and encountering new and ancient cultures and cuisine.

Whilst Carol goes from strength to strength being promoted to IFR regional correspondent, Peter's company Sun Oil decides to close its regional office. After much discussion they decide to go the safe route and return to London.
